Beauty Tips Right in Your Kitchen

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

As the saying goes…. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” Yes indeed its true! But my daughter says, it’s right in the kitchen! Health is balance. To have beauty, the body must be healthy. To achieve this, eat balance diet. The kitchen is the cheapest source of all beauty secrets. Go, grow foods are indispensable to have a beautiful body and nice outlook in life.

Avocado is very rich in vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. It is best for dry or dehydrated skin since they contain so much oil. For instant glow, add a tablespoon of honey to mashed avocado and apply the mixture to your skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Lemon or kalamansi is also best for dry skin. Its acid helps restore the natural lipid barrier of the skin and help maintain its proper pH (potential of Hydrogen) level. Lemon juice or kalamansi juice is also best to whiten underarms, knees and elbows. It also prevents hair fall.

Sugar is best as scrubbing agent. Scrub a little sugar gently on your face and wash with water. Salt is also good for this purpose, but not for sensitive skin. Its rough texture may damage the skin. Orange juice is not only a healthful drink but also good for your skin. Dip your fingers in the juice and pat your cheek, forehead, chin and neck, then wash off after 10 minutes. A blemished skin is not adorable. To have a fresh and lovely clear skin, watermelon juice will be of great help. Apply the juice on your face and then wash it with warm water after 15 minutes and then splash on cold water.

For a great looking hair, olive oil is the answer. It makes an effective conditioning treatment for your scalp and hair. Before shower, massage it to your scalp and sit it in for 20 minutes (Rodale, 2008). To add luster into your hair, coconut oil, a cheaper but as effective substitute for olive oil, will also take care of this.

Exercise of course is not to be neglected. Walking is the best exercise. Brisk walking for at least 30 minutes will not only condition your muscle tone but it is also good for your heart. And of course, the kitchen is inutile without the comforts of your bed. Sleep is the golden chain that ties health and your body together. To have a good night sleep, comfort is necessary. Be sure that your body is well-supported by a right mattress and right pillows. Nice sets of beddings will also add comfort in your sleep.

Money Saving Beauty Tips

We women want to look as good as we can for as long as we can. I think it’s pretty much a universal goal for most of us and yet with the very difficult economy we’re all trying to wade through, it is making that goal ever harder to reach. For many, the days of getting bi-monthly pedicures and manicures are a thing of the past. Millions of Americans are finding that there just isn’t money for the things that aren’t absolute necessities.

Trying to look attractive may not be an absolute necessity but it’s pretty darn important for a lot of people. This fact is evident by the amount of money (in the billions) that is spent each year on beauty products and procedures. Very likely this years’ numbers will be down a great deal due to the decreased disposable income many are dealing with.

Perhaps we can’t continue to spend as much money on beauty maintenance and enhancement as we have in the past but that doesn’t mean we have to give it up entirely. Maybe we’ll just have to go about it in a different way. For instance, many of the treatments that we pay good money for can just as well be given by a family member or a good friend or sometimes we can do them ourselves. Many of us love having a regular manicure and that is something that wouldn’t be all that easy to do for ourselves. We’d be fine working with our dominant hand but when it came time to use the weaker one we’d be out of luck. For this reason it would a good (and fun) idea to get together with a friend for the purpose of giving each other a manicure. Besides an end result of having our hands and nails look good, it would also give us time to spend with a good friend, which by the way is just as important as trying to maintain our beauty rituals.

Many of us enjoy getting our hair trimmed and styled at a salon on a regular schedule and while that is definitely a pleasure it has also become a luxury that many have had to give up. Because most of us are not trained to cut hair, we will still have to find a way to get the occasional professional cut, but we can spread those visits out and in the meantime we can either make do or we can trim it a bit ourselves or have a friend help with a minor trim.

As for hair coloring, products have become available at local drugstores and supermarkets that make it relatively easy to get the job done without the service of a professional. Many women already tend to their own hair coloring and some enlist the aid of a family member of friend. Again, this is something that could be a trade off with a friend. One week you could arrange to do the coloring for a friend and the next week she could do yours for you. Many times you can get by with just a root touch up which will allow you to be able to go for a much longer time before needing a full color session.

Facials are a special treat but they are also rather pricey, so again, this is something that one can handle on their own at their own home. There are wonderful products available that will provide results that you’ll be pleased with. Even though we may be a cash crunch presently, we can still accomplish the things that are important to us. We just need to look for ingenious and inexpensive ways to achieve our goals.

Yoga and Natural Beauty – Seven Super Natural Beauty Tips For Face Care

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought how tired and weary your eyes look? Or how dry and hard your skin is? The beauty industry spends a lot of money projecting a certain image of beauty which causes you to feel inadequate if you do not match up to this ideal.

However from a yogic perspective, real beauty is inner beauty. The yogi sees their physical body as a temple which houses your soul. True beauty is the reflection of your inner self radiating and touching others. From a yogic view you foster your inner beauty through the natural care of your body.

The pace of life today takes its toll on your skin. It zaps your energy and leaves your skin tired, grey and haggard looking. If you are feeling stressed chances are you are over committed, have multiple tasks to complete at work and at home have to juggle your time between caring for your children and family.

You may even feel you do not deserve to take time out for yourself and spend your money on buying household items, paying bills, buying food and clothes for your children. Maybe after paying out for all these essentials you do not have any money left to have a manicure, facial or spend time at a day spa.

Finding time for yourself, to rest and pamper and nurture your inner being seems a luxury and indulgent activity.

This is a false economy. When you take the time to rest, your parasympathetic nervous system kicks in and starts to slow down your heart rate and rebalance your internal organs. This leaves you feeling relaxed and energised. The more you give to yourself, the more energy you have to give to others and manage your day with minimum stress.

Give yourself a break and try out some of these simple natural face care tips. All the ingredients can be found in your kitchen cupboard or easily purchased at your local supermarket.

Seven Super Natural Beauty Tips for Face Care

1. To rest and rejuvenate tired eyes, place a peeled slice of cucumber over each closed eye as you lay down and breathe slowly.

2. Smile – Close your eyes and smile slightly. Take your awareness into your body and send your loving smile to the parts of your body that feel tired, stiff or sore. With practice you can easily practice this inner smile which leaves you looking refreshed and rejuvenated.

3. Facial Steam – a facial steam releases stale oils from the pores and loosens debris sticking to the skin. Simply fill a small bowl with hot (not boiling) water. If you have any herbs or aromatherapy oils sprinkle in a few drops (for example, lavender and peppermint are stimulating, rosemary, eucalyptus and rose are cleansing, chamomile is soothing). If you don’t have any, that’s ok. Place a towel over your head and sit quietly with your head about 20 inches from the water, with the towel covering the bowl. Breathe deeply for about 5 minutes as you allow the steam to gently ease away cares and stress from your skin.

4. Mix together 1 tablespoon ripe avocado, mashed; 1 teaspoon honey and 3 drops of cider vinegar and sesame oil to work to a spreading paste. Apply this mixture to your face, avoiding your eyes. Lie down and close your eyes for 10 – 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water.

5. Apply fresh aloe vera gel, straight from the plant, or vitamin E oil to your face, avoiding your eyes. Rest for 10 – 20 minutes, with closed eyes. Gently wash and rinse your face with warm water.

6. Fill a small bowl with warm water. Sprinkle a few herbs (for example mint, bay leaf infusion, or a few slices of lemon) or aromatherapy oils into the bowl. Place a clean flannel in the bowl, swish it around and then wring it out, leaving it slightly damp. Place the warm flannel over your face. Lie down and rest for 5 – 15 minutes.

7. Mix together 2 tablespoons ripe avocado, 1 teaspoon clear honey, 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon plain yoghurt, place the mashed mixture into a small bowl and leave to chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Spread over your face, avoiding your eyes and lie down for 10 – 15 minutes. Rinse and wipe with lukewarm water.

If your face feels tired, weary and in need of a lift, try any one of the above seven super natural beauty care tips. They will nourish and stimulate you and leave your skin vibrant, clean and glowing.

Tunng – Bullets

Monday, April 5th, 2010

www.tunng.co.uk Lyrics: Green hills and enemies These things they make us sentimental inside Your words are gelignite Or just another sentimental aside We’re catching bullets in our teeth And though it’s easy when you know how it’s done They split the secret up six ways before they gave it to us just before dawn And now we don’t remember Our blood and guts are out We spread our bones across the table at night We cut our fingers off To give ourselves those little extra insights We’re catching bullets in our teeth And though they try hard not to say how it’s done They always do They spill the secret out six ways And beg for our forgiveness Just before dawn And now we don’t remember We’re catching bullets in our teeth It’s hard to do but they’re so sweet And if they take a couple out We try to work things out We catching bullets with our Heads and hearts and all the darkest parts of us It’s strange to find such light In such endless night So sweet to lose a friend You leave the church and taste The air in your lungs Old lies and fireflies Carve angels on your eyes And all is undone You whisper prayers into the dark Up to a god in whom you’ve never believed You always do You split the secret up six ways But it won’t make it any easier to see And now we don’t remember We’re catching bullets in our teeth Its hard to do but they’re so sweet And if they take a couple out We try to work things out We’re catching bullets with our Heads and hearts and all the darkest parts of us

Tips to Choosing a Tanning or Sunscreen Agent

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Remember the days of ordering a coffee at your favourite café -when your most difficult decision was to choose between an espresso, a cappuccino or a flat white? Today of course, your choices are much more diverse – throw in Affogattos, Machhiatos, Viennas, Melloccinos, and Mochas (to name but a few). Of course, your choices don’t end there. Will that be with skim milk or whole? Decaf or regular? In a mug or a cup…?

Now of course that’s just a simple example using coffee. But how do you feel about your choices when it comes to selecting a tanning or sunscreen agent?

Not surprisingly, when faced with the variety and range of products on the market today, the average consumer can find this selection process a little more overwhelming than ordering a cup of coffee.

Tanning products or sunscreen agents are not only available in multiple forms including sprays, lotions, sticks, gels etc.: they can also be targeted to different activities, age ranges and skin types. They are produced by both smaller (less familiar) manufacturers, as well as by the more popular brand name manufacturers such as ‘Banana Boat’, ‘ChapStick’, ‘Clarins’, ‘Clinique’, ‘Coppertone’, ‘Estee Lauder’, ‘Johnson’s’, ‘Neutrogena’, ‘Oil of Olay’, and ‘Vaseline’.

In response to the demands of consumers, manufacturers continue to provide an ever increasing number of products for you to choose from, with many targeted to specific markets. However, the variety of choices doesn’t mean it makes the selection process easy.

So where on earth do you start?

Besides your skin type, here are some simple tips to consider when making your selection from the variety of tanning and sunscreen products available:

a) Chosen Activity: – Being outdoors is not the only element to take into consideration when factoring in your amount of exposure to the sun. You also need to note the intensity with regards to climate, the season, location and time of day.

For example, just because you may be hiking in a cool mountain region or snow skiing, doesn’t mean you should throw all caution aside. Wind and UV rays still reach you, so protection would be wise. Consider also any exposure to surfaces with reflective qualities (i.e. snow, water, sand, etc.), as these can intensify UV ray harm. Activities that make you work up a sweat or those involving water (e.g. basketball, jogging, sun bathing on a hot beach, biking, water skiing, jet skiing, parasailing, outdoor work and exercise etc.), have the potential to wash off your sunscreen, and therefore need to be addressed also.

Choose a sunscreen product for these activities with both UVA and UVB protection and an SPF of 15 or higher, when possible. As for water / sweat activities, choose a product that offers a waterproof or water-resistant agent.

Tip: Where appropriate, you should also consider dressing to cover up as much skin as possible (e.g. wearing long sleeves, a scarf or hat, slacks or jogging pants).

b) Age: – There are only a few words of caution about age. First of all, health care providers do NOT recommend using alcohol-based sunscreen products on children. And they do NOT recommend using sunscreen agents of any type on babies under the age of 6 months. For children older than 6 months, a lotion is the preferred form of sunscreen, over a spray, for example. And the SPF should be a minimum of 15.

c) Use on Your Body: – Your choice of tanning product also depends upon where you are going to apply the lotion, gel, spray or other form. And it also depends upon the health of the area of the body.

For example, there are lip balms with sunscreen (solid or gel-based ones), which not only help the lips, but can also touch up spots in a hurry. Also if you’re trying to apply protection to fingers, ears, nose and other small areas, a physical sunscreen agent, lotion or gel may be easier than a spray. If you have dry skin, you might want to try a product in lotion or cream form. For oily skin, gel-based or alcohol forms of sunscreen might be better choices. N.B: A word of caution: Do not use alcohol-based products with inflamed skin or eczematous.

Keeping the above considerations in mind, should give you a great starting point from which to choose your tanning product or sunscreen agent.

In addition, a recommendation from a friend for a particular product, (assuming they have similar skin type and circumstances), – or even a particular brand name (remembering that the more popular manufacturers produce products catering to different skin types, activities etc.), can sometimes also be helpful in narrowing down your choices.

Ultimately the choice should be based upon your individual situation, your skin type, and your personal preferences. What works for one person may not be the most ideal for another.

Once you’ve done some basic research and have found a particular product you feel is suitable, then why not just start with that product. If you find it doesn’t offer you the results you expected, then simply be prepared to do a little more research, look around further and modify your choices accordingly. While there may be some trial and error involved initially, by becoming more familiar with your preferences and the types of products available, you’re sure to find the product that’s right for you.
